From Itineraries Midwest Summer 2010 Issue.

This sample itinerary is best anytime of the year!

Day One

9 – 10:30 am
Start the day with a tour of the Western Historic Trails Center and watch “Building the Transcontinental Railroad” in the theater.

10:30 -12:00 pm
See a house on the Underground Railroad, the Todd House. Built in 1853 by the Rev. John Todd, this house had a cellar filled with boxes of clothing, ammunition, muskets, sabers, and rifles.

12 – 1:00 pm
Stop for lunch at PJ’s at the Depot, a restaurant located in a historic Rock Island Depot.

1 – 2:15 pm
See this cabin of the Underground Railroad, and travel down the underground cave to better understand what the remarkable flight from slavery entailed at the Mayhew Cabin.

2:15 – 4:30 pm
Travel to Hitchcock House, built in 1856 by Rev. George Hitchcock. The secret room in the basement was used to hide runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.

4:30 – 7:00 pm
Freshen up for dinner at Tish’s, with a private room for groups. This is a locally owned favorite.

Day Two

9 – 10:00 am
View this restored 1899 Rock Island Depot, and its many railroad artifacts as well as their outdoor railcar display at RailsWest Museum.

10 – 11:00 am
Union Pacific Railroad Museum is housed in the former 1930 Carnegie Library, holding one of the oldest corporate railroad collections in the nation.

11 – 1:00 pm
Enjoy a guided tour of the Dodge House; the Victorian home of General Grenville Dodge. He was dubbed the “greatest railroad builder of all time”. Enjoy lunch in the third floor ballroom.

1 – 2:00 pm
Take a look at “two of the greatest locomotives ever to power the Union Pacific Railroad,” Union Pacific Big Boy #4023 and Union Pacific Centennial #6900 at Kennefick Park. Kennefick Park is next to Omaha’s Lauritzen Gardens. Take some ‘time to smell the flowers’ while you’re there.

2 – 4:00 pm
Your last stop is at the Durham Museum, where beautiful architecture blends with memories of a time gone by, housed in Omaha’s Union Station.
