Head for the Hills in Council Bluffs!

This sample itinerary is best spring through fall.

Day One

9 – 10:00 am

Marvel at the handcrafted quality furniture and custom cabinetry built with locally harvested hardwoods at the Loess Hills Woodworks showroom.

10 – 12:00 pm

Visit Honey Craft Creamery, the only certified goat dairy west of Des Moines, situated in a renovated historic bunkhouse on a century farm. Goats are fed rich, chemical-free alfalfa raised on the farm along with native plants from the Loess Hills.  Using time-honored farmstead techniques, the milk is crafted into a mild, dense and smooth Chevre with a wonderful range of flavors your groups are sure to love.

12 – 1:30 pm

Sawmill Hollow Family Farm is the first aronia berry farm in the country and has a naturally spring fed lake visible from the comfort of the lodge. Enjoy a pulled pork sandwich and food made from the aronia berry.

1:30 – 2:30 pm

In 2009 ground broke for the Loess Hills Lavender Farm. The farm has over 1,100 acres and provides a peaceful experience centered on the mystical and magical herb Lavender. A series of food, lotions and bath products are produced allowing you to experience a piece of the farm in your home.

2:30 – 4:30 pm

Harrison County Historical Village and Welcome Center includes the new Lincoln Highway/Loess Hills Interpretive Center featuring films, a scenic overlook, road demonstration area and trail. Shop the gift area with Iowa products.

4:30 – 7:00 pm

Freshen up for dinner. A locally owned favorite is Tish’s with private rooms for groups. Council Bluff’s has many dinning options for your group.

Day Two

10 – 11:30 pm

Tour the Pottawattamie County Courthouse where Grant Wood corn murals from the Chieftain Hotel have been restored to their former glory. The murals have been placed in the lobby of the courthouse and were designed to make viewers feel as if they were sitting in an Iowa field with tall stalks of corn, rolling hills and barns dotting the horizon.

11 – 1:00 pm

Marvel at this lavish Victorian mansion, the Historic General Dodge House. This 14-room mansion, built in 1869, is one of Iowa’s premier historic homes and is considered a National Historic Landmark. General Grenville M. Dodge, a Civil War veteran, dubbed “the greatest railroad builder of all time”, built the home. The mansion is historically authentic, complete with a majority of the Dodge family’s original furnishings. After your tour enjoy lunch in the third floor ballroom, where the Dodge’s entertained many prominent historic figures.

1 – 2:30

Spend the afternoon at the Prairie Crossing Vineyards & Winery. This winery truly believes that a great wine starts in the vineyard. Both the vineyard and winery offer spectacular views and indoor and outdoor seating. Your group will enjoy the opportunity to spend some time in the gift shop.
