Boadening Your Mind – Itinerary

This itinerary works best on a weekend May through September, but can be customized for any time.


9 – 11:00 am
First stop is the Historic Valley Junction in downtown West Des Moines. A charming, renovated railroad district, with a collection of more than 120 retail businesses and restaurants.

11 – 1:00 pm
Tour the Jordan House a 16-room, 1850 Victorian home – originally a station on the Underground Railroad.

1 – 2:30 pm
Enjoy a taste of Italy at Biaggi’s Ristornate Italiano. Drink wine imported directly from Italy. Also pick from a full selection of house-made and imported pasta, soups and salads, pizza, seafood, and more!

2:30 – 4:00 pm
Take a tour of the 550-acre, open-air museum, Living History Farms. Interpreters dressed in period costume recreate the daily routines of early Midwestern agriculture and rural life.

4 – 5:00 pm
Tour the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, which houses exhibits honoring Iowa men and women who have served the state and nation in peace and war.

5 – 6:00 pm
Check into the Holiday Inn Conference Center, located next to the Des Moines Airport.

6 – 8:00 pm
Have a fine dining experience at the Crystal Tree Restaurant and Lounge, located in the hotel. Dine on American cuisine featuring steaks, seafood and pasta.


9 – 10:00 am
Enjoy a Champagne Sunday Brunch back at the Crystal Tree Restaurant and Lounge before you start your day.

10 – 11:30 am
Tour the Salisbury House, a 42-room mansion filled with a collection of original art, tapestries, rare books, and antique furnishings. Please call ahead to make special arrangements for your group.

11:30 – 2:00 pm
See the Sherman Hill National Historic District where Victorian homes are abound in one of Des Moines’ oldest neighborhoods! Enjoy a three-course high tea at Joie De Vie Tea Salon, in a beautiful Victorian mansion. Also see Hoyt Sherman Place and the Wallace House.

2 – 4:00 pm
Take a special tour of the world-renowned Des Moines Art Center. See art collections from the 19th, 20th and 21st century.
